The "Most German" of All German Castles

Wartburg Castle. It sits in splendour above Eisenach, looking as if it had grown from the rock. The primeval forests that surround its mighty walls seem endless. Those walls have born witness to more than nine hundred years of German history, and at the same time embody the Germans’ view of their own past.

Three times, the Wartburg has been the focal point of historic events. In the Middle Ages it was the centre of power and a stronghold of royal culture, but also the residence of one of the world’s most famous saints. In the sixteenth century it was a central staging ground for the Reformation. And in the 19th century, it became a symbol of the movement for unity and democracy. Thus it is the "most German" of all German castles.
